Beaches Parks & Attractions Mayan Ruins Towns Golf Fishing Pictures coming soon - current ones are just a place holder. Chemuyil: The pueblo of Chemuyil is a quaint, working class community with economical restaurants, laundromat, internet cafes and convenience stores for any necessities during your stay in Chan Chemuyil. Notable eateries include Pizzeria Leo’s (dinner only), La Palapa (breakfast and lunch) and Loncheria el Parque (dinner only). Chemuyil is just a half mile from Chan Chemuyil via the jungle road (left out of the neighborhood) and then a right at the Y. The Jungle Place Monkey Preserve is also located on the jungle road in Chemuyil, as is cenote Xunaan-Ha. ![]() ![]() Akumal: One of the most popular snorkeling areas in the Caribbean, Akumal “place of the turtle,” is famous for an array of giant sea turtles, colorful fish and a variety of tropical sealife. The dive shop on the north end of the beach offers rental equipment for snorkeling and scuba diving trips to several reefs. The small seaside town contains several quaint bars and restaurants, a grocery store and gift shops. Lol-Ha Restaurant and Bar has excellent mango margaritas and chilaquiles in tomatillo sauce. La Cueva Del Pescador has our favorite meal, fresh grouper grilled with garlic and butter, along with awesome margaritas. Half Moon Bay and Yal-ku Lagoon (biodegradable sunscreen requied) are ideal snorkeling and swimming. To get to Akumal, make a left on 307 north until you see the sign on the right, turn there and proceed to the arches. ![]() ![]() Tulum: Located on 307 south of Chan Chemuyil by 10 miles, the pueblo of Tulum is very pedestrian and has a cultural downtown experience with restaurants that serve local cuisine at reasonable prices. It is very laid back and rustic with a bohemian feel. If you are looking for undiscovered Mexico, Tulum will give you a taste of it. Both the Mayan Ruins of Tulum and El Paraiso Beach are not to be missed. Recommended restaurants include Cetli for Mayan cuisine, Don Cafeto’s for Mexican food, Antojitos La Chiapaneca for “gringas,” and El Pollo Bronco for economically priced oven-fired chicken. San Francisco grocery store is a large supermarket, great for stocking the casa. ![]() ![]() Playa del Carmen: A vibrant tropical city with charm and character, “Playa” offers upscale shopping and restaurants around 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida). Playa also has types of water activities, a happening nightlife, ferry rides for a day trip to Cozumel and much more. Recommended restaurants are Yaxche for gourmet Mayan Cuisine and El Fogon for authentic Mexican - specifically their tacos “al pastor,” or HC Monterrey for arrachera. Playa Del Carmen is an ideal stopping post from the Cancun airport to Chan Chemuyil for groceries and other convenience items. We recommend Soriana because it is on the right side of 307 heading south. Mega and Wal-Mart are additional options. ![]() ![]() Valladolid: Nicknamed “The Sultaness of the East,” Valladolid is a bustling Mayan colonial city, perfect for a day trip from Chan Chemuyil. It is a popular stopping point en route to the ruins of Chichen Itza or Ek Balam. The city square, or ‘zocalo’, has a beautiful cathedral and many shops to peruse for Mayan crafts. El Meson del Marques is a favorite lunch spot after visiting Ek Balam. ![]() ![]() |
