What is the community of Chan Chemuyil like?

Chan Chemuyil is a friendly neighborhood development of over 200 single family homes situated between Akumal and Tulum with close proximity to all the attractions of the Riviera Maya. The community has been transformed with extensive renovations to beautify these simple single family Mexican casas. It is a diverse community comprised of mostly part-time residents from the US, Canada and abroad. Cenotes are located on the grounds to enjoy.

 

How far is Xcacel beach from Chan Chemuyil?

Xcacel beach can be accessed via a private walking path in the community located near the cenote on Calle Belize and it is about a 10-15 minute walk. However, keep in mind you will have to cross a major road to reach the beach. Parking is available at the beach, so you may choose to drive to Xcacel instead. In order to do so, drive south on 307 until you reach a retorno and then head north to make the right hand turn to Xcacel beach. There is also a cenote for swimming at the southern end of the beach.

 

Do I need a rental car?

A rental car is strongly recommended to maximize your visit and see all the sites in the area. To compare rental rates, visit www.carrentals.com. Public transportation via colectivo and cab are available. Transfer service is another option with a shuttle to/from the airport, inquire at www.akumaltransfer.com. How long is the drive from the Cancun Airport (CUN)?

Are there restaurants within walking distance of Chan Chemuyil?

It is a 20 minute walk to restaurants in the town of Chemuyil – about a half mile. Notable eateries include Pizzeria Leo’s (dinner only), La Palapa (breakfast and lunch) and Loncheria el Parque (dinner only). If you are walking at night, bring a flashlight because the back road is not well lit.

 

Are there grocery stores or markets nearby?

On the trip south from the airport on 307 you'll pass major grocery store chains in Playa Del Carmen, including Soriana, Chedraui, Wal-Mart and Mega. Another great option is San Franciso de Assis supermarket in Tulum, 10 minutes south of Chan Chemuyil on 307. In the pueblo of Chemuyil there is a large convenience store called the Super Pool Express and there are also many smaller local stores that will have basic necessities.

 

What are some recommended local activities?

As a visitor to the area, you should plan to visit Xcacel beach to relax on a secluded stretch of white sand and turquoise water, perfect for bodysurfing. Xel-Ha, an eco-theme park, is a mile and a half south of Chan Chemuyil. The caves, cenotes and zip-lines of Hidden Worlds/Dos Ojos are just 2 miles south. Akumal Bay is not to be missed for snorkeling with sea turtles - it is 5 miles north. Also in Akumal, there are several seaside restaurants, shops and beach bars, in addition to Yal-Ku Lagoon for snorkeling in an aquarium-like setting. Several deep sea fish excursions depart from Akumal as well. A local monkey preserve, "The Jungle Place," is on the same road as Chan Chemuyil and reservations should be made in advance of your stay. The Mayan Ruins of Tulum are only ten miles south and offer wide stretches of beautiful beaches with oceanfront bars and restaurants plus a lot of action in the pueblo.

 

Do the casas have air conditioning?

        Yes.

 

Are there caretakers on site?

Monday through Friday there is a property management office on-site and always available via phone in case of emergency.

 

Is there TV Service?

Some casas offer satellite television service with 100s of channels, please inquire. Most casas have a DVD player a small collection of movies but a few have chosen board games and a book collections for evening enjoyment.

 

Are there internet cafes nearby?

Chan Chemuyil has a community WiFi hub which the owner sells time on a weekly and monthly basis. There are two internet cafes in the pueblo of Chemuyil. One is part of the laundromat (lavanderia) and the other is attached to the video store across from Pizzeria Leo's. The price is approximately $1.20 USD an hour.  If you are bringing a laptop, free wi-fi is offered in Tulum to patrons at Empanada Joe's and Don Cafeto.

 

Is drinking water provided?

Yes. Purified Bottled Water is available in a dispenser for each casa.

 

Is there laundry service?

Laundry service is available for an extra charge and can be arranged through property management. Full service laundromat in pueblo of Chemuyil also.

Yes, please inquire. Daily kids club is also available in Akumal for $6/hr per child.

 

Is there cook service available?

Yes. Please arrange in advance. Service may be limited during peak season.

 

Are beach towels, hair dryers, iron and ironing board provided?

Yes.

Is there a crib and high chair?

No.

 

Do I need adapters for my electrical appliances?

No. The outlets are the same as in the US and Canada.

           

Is the Riviera Maya region of Mexico safe?

The media has shown Mexico in the news due to recent issues, mostly in the border crossing areas and inner cities where there is violence because of political backlash. The coastline south of Cancun in Quintana Roo is a tourist zone and there is low crime in comparison to most large cities in the US and Canada. Is the community of Chan Chemuyil safe?

Yes, it is safe for families – but take normal precautions and be sure to lock the doors to your rental casa. Also, do not leave valuables in your car and always lock it. Neighbors are extremely friendly and go out of their way to help each other out. Kids play in the streets and on the beach - making new friends with other vacationers on a daily basis. We have had amazing feedback from our guests - some of which were visiting Mexico for the first time not knowing what to expect due to the news.
